At Abba's Gems, quality is of the utmost importance. We search the hills and mountains looking for the one-of-a-kind unique stone that we can cut, shape, form, and polish, bringing to life a beautiful piece of Abba's creation. Slight imperfections occur with any natural stone and to us, this simply increases the beauty and wonder of the piece.
John Muir once said, "How Glorious a greeting the sun gives the mountains!" We believe this with our whole being and that is why when Martin is not in the shop creating a unique piece of jewelry, we are in the mountains looking for that special specimen! It takes a keen eye to discern which piece might be broken open to display the beauty of Abba's creation that's hidden away, later to be revealed at a time of His choosing!
There are many Jewish values that help us explore rocks but let's focus on Ma'aseh B'reishit, 'the miracle of creation'! We say this blessing when we find our special rock, "Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam Oseh Maaseh V'Reisheet. (Blessed are You Oh Lord, Creator of the Universe Who Makes all of Creation)"
We are all part of His tapestry and as such, each stone has a story to tell.
At Abba's Gems, each client is treated with the utmost care and attention. We look forward to creating that special piece just for you or your loved one so please don't hesitate to ask. Many times, we can craft a unique, handmade, heirloom piece for you that you'd be pleased to pass down the generations. All of Abba's Gems jewelry is handmade so turnaround times vary, but we will get to each piece as soon as we can. Abba's Gems works closely with each client to ensure that their vision is brought to life in a stunning and unique piece of heirloom quality jewelry.

Abba's Gems is excited to announce that soon, very soon, Martin will be making Mezuzahs. Martin has made them before as gifts and for our home and we felt it is time to share with the world. These all-natural stones are selected for their beauty and special features that our Abba gave them. Martin then fashions a carving out of the stone, featuring a pattern that speaks to him. The stone on the left is rhyolite and is the stone that the pictured Mezuzah was cut from. Isn't it beautiful! And it's formed by the Hand of our Creator!
These mezuzahs on the right are made from obsidian! It's very difficult to work with and when cutting, it can shatter at any time. The process of fashioning the mezuzah out of stone takes hours. and sometimes days.
The Hebrew word mezuzah means “doorpost.”
According to tradition, the mezuzah is to be affixed to the doorpost at the entrance to a Jewish home as well as at the entrance to each of the interior rooms except for bathrooms. The mezuzah itself consists of a small scroll of parchment (k’laf ) on which are written two biblical passages. The first is Deuteronomy 6:4–9:
Hear, O Israel! The Eternal is our God, the Eternal alone. You shall love the Eternal your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. Take to heart these instructions with which I charge you this day. Impress them upon your children. Recite them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead; inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
The second passage is Deuteronomy 11:13–21:
If, then, you obey the commandments that I enjoin upon you this day, loving the Eternal your God and serving [God] with all your heart and soul, I will grant the rain for your land in season, the early rain and the late. You shall gather in your new grain and wine and oil—I will also provide grass in the fields for your cattle—and thus you shall eat your fill. Take care not to be lured away to serve other gods and bow to them. For the Eternal’s anger will flare up against you, shutting up the skies so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its produce; and you will soon perish from the good land that the Eternal is assigning to you. Therefore impress these My words upon your very heart: bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead, and teach them to your children—reciting them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up; and inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates—to the end that you and your children may endure, in the land that the Eternal swore to your fathers to assign to them, as long as there is a heaven over the earth.

Martin is the craftsman who has the God-given eye for bringing out the beauty of the gems created by our Abba. His wife Kelly works on the web site and the blog. Martin and Kelly love the Northern Nevada life and everything having to do with it! When not out rockhounding, you can find them at home, Martin in his shop working on the latest gem, and Kelly at her computer working on home loans or the Abba's Gems site.
